सोमवार व्रत का महत्व (Why Somvar Vrat is Observed)

Monday — Somvar — is astrologically governed by Chandra (the Moon), and the Moon resides on Shiva’s crown. The Shiva Purana and the Skanda Purana both describe Monday as the day when worship of Shiva carries heightened spiritual potency. Observing the Somvar vrat for sixteen consecutive Mondays (the Solah Somvar vrat) is one of the most celebrated forms — said to grant a worthy spouse, marital harmony, and the removal of long-standing obstacles.

The fast is also commonly observed throughout the holy month of Sawan, when each Monday is called a Sawan Somvar and is considered especially powerful. Our complete Sawan Somvar 2026 guide covers the Sawan-specific observance with all 2026 Monday dates.

व्रत की संपूर्ण विधि (Step-by-Step Observance Guide)

The Somvar vrat begins at sunrise and is broken in the evening after the Shiva puja. The traditional steps:

1. Bathe before sunrise and wear clean clothes — white or saffron is traditional. Set up the puja area facing east or north, with a Shivalinga or an image of Shiva.

2. Take a sankalpa — a formal vow stating the day, the vrat (Somvar), the deity (Shiva), and your intention.

3. Perform abhishek of the Shivalinga: first with pure water, then milk, then water again. Add honey, ganga jal if available, and a few non-tulsi flowers.

4. Offer bilva (bel) leaves on the Shivalinga in sets of three. Bilva is the only foliage strictly required for Shiva worship.

5. Chant the panchakshara mantra Om Namah Shivaya 108 times, or recite the Shiv Chalisa or the Rudrashtakam.

6. Conclude with aarti, distribute prasad, and visit a Shiva temple in the evening if possible.

सोमवार व्रत में क्या खाएं? (What to Eat During Somvar Vrat)

Somvar vrat is a partial fast, not a nirjala fast. Through the day, devotees take fruit, milk, fresh juice, and water. The fast is broken in the evening after the puja with a single satvik meal — typically phalahari, but in many households a regular satvik meal (no onion, no garlic, no non-veg) is also acceptable. For deeper context on what fasting does to the body and why a satvik approach matters, see our health benefits of fasting guide.

Allowed: fresh fruit, dairy, kuttu, singhara, sabudana, makhana, sendha namak, ghee, jeera, ginger, green chillies, most vegetables. Avoid: regular grains, all lentils, onion, garlic, regular salt, non-veg, alcohol, packaged snacks.

सोमवार व्रत कथा (The Story Behind Somvar Vrat)

The traditional Somvar vrat katha tells the story of a wealthy merchant who, despite all material success, had no child. On the advice of a sage, he and his wife began observing the Somvar vrat — bathing the Shivalinga every Monday, offering bilva, and reciting the Shiv Chalisa. After several months of consistent observance, Shiva and Parvati appeared in a dream and granted them a son. The blessing came with one condition: the child would live only sixteen years.

When the time came, the parents — heartbroken but resolute — continued the Somvar vrat with the same constancy they had begun with. Their faith and the merit of the unbroken observance moved Shiva, who extended the boy’s life and returned blessings to the family. The katha is the origin of the “Solah Somvar” tradition — sixteen consecutive Mondays of fasting, considered one of the most powerful Shiva observances.

व्रत के नियम और सावधानियां (Rules and Precautions)

Beyond the food rules, three observances complete the Somvar vrat: maintain mauna (silence) where possible during the day, avoid argument and gossip, and dedicate at least one hour to japa or reading from the Shiva Purana. The vrat is meant to discipline the mind as much as the body — a Monday spent in distraction yields less than a Monday spent in conscious attention.

Who should not observe: pregnant women, children under twelve, those on diabetes or blood pressure medication that requires regular food, and the seriously ill. The shastras grant equal merit to those who substitute the fast with extra puja, charity, and recitation when health makes the fast itself unsafe.

पारण का सही समय (When and How to Break the Fast)

The Somvar fast is broken in the evening after the Shiva puja — typically at sunset, once the lamp has been waved and the prasad offered. Begin with the puja prasad (a piece of milk sweet or fruit), then a glass of milk or coconut water, then a single satvik meal. Do not break the fast with heavy fried food; the digestive system has been resting and needs gentle reactivation.
