(Why Food Rules Matter in Vrat)
The food rules of any vrat are not arbitrary. They follow a clear three-way classification from the yogic tradition: satvik foods (light, fresh, easily digested) support clarity of mind; rajasic foods (stimulating — onion, garlic, regular salt) agitate the senses; tamasic foods (heavy, processed, fermented — meat, eggs, alcohol) dull awareness. A vrat is built on the premise that the body and mind are easier to discipline when the food is satvik for the duration of the observance.
This is why nearly every Hindu vrat excludes the same core list — onion, garlic, regular grains, non-veg, alcohol — even though the specific allowed list differs by vrat. The underlying logic is consistent; the surface rules adapt to the deity and the day.
(Ekadashi Food Rules)
Ekadashi follows phalahari rules. Allowed: fresh fruit, milk, dairy, sabudana, makhana, kuttu, singhara, sweet potato, raw banana, sendha namak, ghee, jeera, ginger, green chillies, and most non-onion non-garlic vegetables. Strictly excluded: rice, wheat, dal, all regular grains and lentils, onion, garlic, regular salt, non-veg, eggs, alcohol, packaged food. Many devotees observe stricter variants — no salt at all, or full nirjala (no water) on significant Ekadashis like Nirjala Ekadashi.
(Navratri Food Rules)
Navratri rules are similar to Ekadashi but apply for nine consecutive days. The vrat-specific grains — kuttu, singhara, rajgira, sabudana — are the staples. Sendha namak replaces all regular salt. Some traditions allow sama (barnyard millet) as an additional grain. Avoid: onion, garlic, regular grains, all dals, besan, sooji, non-veg, alcohol, and packaged food. (Somvar and Pradosh Food Rules)
Somvar (Monday) and Pradosh vrats are both Shiva-focused and follow slightly looser rules than Ekadashi. Both are partial fasts — fruit and milk through the day, one satvik meal in the evening after the Shiva puja. The evening meal can be phalahari (kuttu puri, sabudana khichdi) in strict households, or regular satvik food (no onion, no garlic, no non-veg) in others.
Pradosh adds one specific detail: the fast must be broken at the end of pradosh kaal (within 90 minutes of sunset), not at moonrise or the next morning. The meal therefore happens sooner than for Ekadashi or Sankashti.
(Universal Prohibited Foods)
(Reason) |
|---|---|
(Onion / Garlic) | Rajasic — stimulate the senses, break satvik continuity |
(Meat, Eggs, Fish) | Tamasic — fundamentally incompatible with vrat |
(Alcohol) | Tamasic — strictly excluded across all vrats |
(Regular Table Salt) | Use only sendha namak (rock salt) |
(Packaged Snacks) | Almost always contain prohibited ingredients |
(Fermented Food) | Tamasic in classification; avoid during fast |
(Tobacco) | Tamasic — strictly avoid on any vrat day |
(What Can You Drink While Fasting?)
Allowed across all vrats: water (in plenty — hydration is the single most important variable), milk, coconut water, fresh-squeezed fruit juice made at home, lassi, and herbal infusions like ginger-tulsi tea. In stricter traditions, tea and coffee are avoided; most households allow them in moderation. Strictly excluded: alcohol, aerated drinks, packaged juices (preservatives almost always disqualify them), and any beverage containing fermented or non-veg ingredients.
The single biggest reason fasters end the day with a headache is mild dehydration. Drink water steadily through the day, not only at meal times.
(How to Break Any Fast Correctly)
The parana — the formal breaking of the fast — matters as much as the fast itself. Three rules apply universally:
First, begin small. The digestive system has been resting for 12–24 hours; heavy fried food at the first bite will cause distress. Start with water, then fruit, then a light meal. Build up to normal food over an hour.
Second, the parana meal should remain satvik. Even after the fast is officially broken, the spirit of the day extends into the meal. Onion, garlic, non-veg, and alcohol violate that continuity — most traditions wait until the next day before returning to regular eating.
Third, observe the time window. Each vrat has its own parana window — Ekadashi parana is in the morning of dwadashi, Pradosh at end of pradosh kaal, Sankashti after moonrise. For the complete framework on parana across vrats, see our vrat todne ke niyam guide.
