(Why Sankashti Chaturthi Removes Obstacles)

The word sankashti literally means “deliverance from difficulty.” Lord Ganesha — the Vighnaharta, remover of obstacles — is the presiding deity of this fast, and the observance is said to clear away both visible and invisible blockages: stalled projects, family disputes, financial setbacks, persistent health issues. The Brahma Vaivarta Purana describes Sankashti Chaturthi as one of the most reliable monthly observances for those navigating a difficult phase of life.

Observed twelve times a year, Sankashti Chaturthi builds a steady rhythm of Ganesha worship across the calendar — and the merit, the shastras emphasise, compounds with consistency rather than intensity. For the broader picture of major fasts and their festival significance, see our guide to major Hindu vrat festivals.

(Complete Observance Guide)

The Sankashti Chaturthi vrat begins at sunrise and is broken in the evening after moonrise.

1. Bathe before sunrise and wear clean clothes — red or yellow is traditional. Set up the puja area facing east or north, with a Ganesha image or murti.

2. Take the sankalpa: state the day, the vrat (Sankashti Chaturthi), the deity (Ganesha), and your specific intention or obstacle to be removed.

3. Light a ghee lamp and an incense stick. Offer red flowers (especially hibiscus), durva grass (in bunches of 21 — Ganesha’s preferred offering), and modak or laddu as bhog.

4. Recite the Ganesh Chalisa, the Sankashti Chaturthi Vrat Katha, or 108 repetitions of Om Gan Ganapataye Namah. The Ganesha Atharvashirsha is also commonly recited on this day.

5. Perform the aarti — “Sukhakarta Dukhaharta” is the traditional Sankashti aarti — and then wait for moonrise.

(Why Moon Sighting is Essential for This Vrat)

Sankashti Chaturthi is one of the few Hindu vrats where chandra darshan — sighting the moon and offering arghya to it — is a non-negotiable part of the observance. The fast cannot be broken until the moon has been seen and the arghya offered. This is the day when the moon rises late (around 9–10pm in most months), and devotees often wait several hours after sunset for the rise.

The arghya is offered by holding water in a copper or steel kalash, raising it toward the moon, and pouring it out slowly while chanting Om Chandrayai Namah. The moon’s appearance on Chaturthi is also considered to grant additional merit specifically for this fast — most other days, moon-sighting on Chaturthi is traditionally avoided.

(Food Rules for Sankashti Chaturthi)

Sankashti is observed as a phalahari fast through the day, broken in the evening after moonrise with a single satvik meal. Through the day: fruit, milk, sabudana, makhana, water, and coconut water. The evening meal traditionally includes modak (Ganesha’s favourite sweet), gud, and til ke laddu. For deeper guidance on maintaining a monthly fasting rhythm without burnout, see our how to maintain a fasting streak guide.

Avoid: regular grains, all lentils, onion, garlic, regular salt (sendha namak only), non-veg, eggs, alcohol, packaged food.

(The Vrat Katha)

The traditional Sankashti Chaturthi katha tells of a poor washerwoman who, despite years of hardship, kept her devotion to Ganesha intact. On the advice of an elder, she began observing Sankashti Chaturthi every month — fasting through the day, performing the puja, waiting for the moon. Within a year, her son recovered from a long illness, her family’s fortunes turned, and she became one of the most respected devotees in her village. The katha is the origin of the tradition that Sankashti is particularly effective for those facing financial or familial hardship.

(The Extra-Auspicious Angaarki Chaturthi)

When Sankashti Chaturthi falls on a Tuesday, the day is called Angaarki Chaturthi (or Angarki Sankashti). This combination — Tuesday governed by Mangal, plus the Chaturthi of Lord Ganesha — is considered the most spiritually powerful Sankashti of the year. The Brahma Vaivarta Purana states that a single Angaarki Chaturthi observed properly carries the merit of all twelve Sankashtis of the year combined. Devotees facing severe karmic difficulties or long-standing obstacles often make special effort to observe Angaarki Chaturthi at a major Ganesha temple — Siddhivinayak in Mumbai, Ashtavinayaka in Maharashtra, or any local Ganesha mandir of significance.
